Belgian Go Federation

Founded in 1981, the BGF brings together all amateurs and professionals of the game of go in Belgium. We organise national tournaments, manage player rankings and promote the game throughout the country.

Pre-history of Belgian Go — a few players in the 60s, a club in Liège

1980

'Romantic players' period at café Le Greenwich in Brussels — a dozen players, two Asian masters

1981

Official founding of the Belgian Go Federation with ~15 members. First president: Michel Gilbert

1984

Opening of the Waterloo club; students discover the game. New clubs at ULB and Louvain-la-Neuve

1985

1st Belgian Championship (15 participants) · Launch of BELGO magazine · 1st international tournament (86 players) · Visit by Chinese professionals

1988

Our 1st shodan (1-dan); go begins its growth in Flanders

1991

Belgium organises the European Go Congress

1994

Foundation of 2 clubs: Liège and Ghent

1997

100 members!

Slight decrease in membership/participation; our 1st 5-dan

The future is youth; a second EGC in Belgium
